Inspired by the varied evergreen forests of Washington state where I spent much of my childhood, Evergreen Cycles explores the timeless rhythms of forests. Each of the four movements depicts a scene from the rich arboreal life cycle, from lushness and stillness to a raging inferno.
The first movement, Cloud Forest, transports the listener to the misty realm of the temperate rainforests on the Olympic Peninsula. These ecosystems are some of the rarest biomes on Earth, and while cloud forests are generally tropical, there are a select few that occur in temperate regions. The Olympic National Forest is one of them. Sprightly and mystical melodies weave a tapestry of lush moss and verdure.
In Boreal Winter, the music turns still and solemn, mirroring the austere beauty of a winter landscape. Amid the stillness, light flurries of snow drift down, glinting in the cool winter light.
Phoenix represents the intense cycle of destruction and renewal caused by forest fires. Building from the ashes, the music soars with renewed vigor and vitality symbolizing the resilience of the natural world.
The final movement, Roots, delves deep into the heart of the forest. Grounded and tranquil, this movement reflects the enduring strength and regenerative power of the forest’s ancient trees.
Evergreen Cycles is scored for two flutes and harp, with one flutist performing on alto flute, allowing for a naturalistic and evocative musical palette that brings the cycles of the forest to life.
