In the Bleak Midwinter

In the Bleak Midwinter is an English Christmas carol based on a poem by Christina Rossetti and was first set to music by Gustav Holst. Blake’s arrangement is based on this version, which is his favorite Christmas carol. The original poem has been reduced to its first and last stanzas for use in this setting.

This arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter was performed and recorded in 2018 by the Edmonds Community College Symphonic Choir under the direction of Kirk Marcy.

In the Bleak Midwinter -- Christina Rossetti

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
. . .
What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.
